Nel 2008 segue At Our Tables, registrato a Detroit e prodotto da Eric Hoegemeyer (Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow).

English translation:

Insanitia (a pun that describes the madness that pervades our time) is the brand new album by the gritty Boston singer-songwriter Eileen Rose, released by Renato Bottani‘s Italian-based New Shot Records. A highly accomplished artist with an excellent career spanning the United States and England, this latest album pays homage to her Italian roots, creating a bridge between Italy and America.

Eileen Rose Giadone, aka Eileen Rose, was born the second youngest of nine children to an Irish mother and a Sicilian father. Raised in a family passionate about music and dance, she cultivated her musical education through exposure to a wide variety of musical genres, from traditional Irish folk to country, crooner, and big band. She wrote her first song at fourteen, inspired by her older brother, who took her to a couple of concerts, sparking her passion. After finishing high school, she immediately dropped out of college to form her first band and gain experience in the local scene. In 1991, she moved to London and began playing wherever she could until she was noticed by Geoff Travis, owner of Rough Trade, a label that released her first two solo albums, Shine Like It Does in 2000 and Long Shot Novena in 2002 (featuring Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Del Amitri, and The Ruts). They were well received by critics who had high praise for her, including Nick Hornby, who cited one of her songs, Good Man, as one of his favorites in his book 31 Songs. In 2003, she returned to Boston where she began writing her third album, Come The Storm. She had the opportunity to play a gig opening for Judy Collins, who was so captivated by her personality that she released it on her own label. In 2008, At Our Tables followed, recorded in Detroit and produced by Eric Hoegemeyer (Kid Rock, Sheryl Crow). The following year, she moved to Nashville and began a significant artistic partnership with guitarist The Legendary Rich Gilbert (Frank Black & The Catholics, Tanya Donelly, Uncle Tupelo, Steve Wynn). Her time in Music City, where she performed at the most famous venues on Lower Broad Street, undoubtedly refined and influenced her songwriting, as evidenced by her subsequent albums, Luna Turista (2009), Be Many Gone (2014), and Muscle Shoals (2019), genuine expressions of a style that blends loose country-rock sound with generous doses of blues, folk, gospel, and rockabilly.

Recorded at Shelter Recording Studio in Meda (Italy) and produced by Eileen Rose with Rich Gilbert and singer-songwriter and promoter Andrea Parodi, Insanitia consists of nine original songs and five particularly fitting and meaningful covers. All Italian, except for Chris Maclachlan on bass, are the top-notch musicians accompanying the leader, supplemented from time to time by the participation of some extraordinary guests. Joining the band are Massimiliano Malavasi on drums, Riccardo Maccabruni on keyboards, Paolo Ercoli on dobro, Raffaele Kohler on trumpet, and Luciano Macchia on trombone.

The album kicks off with Dusty Bones, released as a single to precede the album, a lively electric ballad with a rock edge and a melodic hook that captivates the listener. We move on immediately to the excellent cover of Will the Wolf Survive? by Los Lobos, which rivals the original and is enhanced by the presence of Joel Guzman on accordion. By choosing this timely and touching track, Eileen Rose demonstrates her disagreement from the current US administration’s ferocious anti-immigration policies: «I had no idea, when we recorded the song in 2023 just how ugly and shameful the situation would become in my country. It’s made me all the happier to highlight this incredible song with my own version». The straightforward, classic country of From Away, furnished by Gilbert with a full complement of pedal steel, dobro, and banjo, features none other than Charlie McCoy, Bob Dylan’s longtime collaborator (he played some guitar parts on Desolation Row, so to speak), on harmonica.

It’s heart-warming to listen to The Blonde Lady Of The Cherry Trees, the English translation by Andrea Parodi of Signora Bionda Dei Ciliegi, the splendid song by the unforgettable Ivan Graziani that opened his 1983 album. Eileen’s version is particularly heartfelt and touches deep emotional chords. Next comes the ironic, joyful country of Kind of Hate You, sung with Bobo Rondelli and featuring Carrie Rodriguez (a Texas folk singer who has previously collaborated with Chip Taylor, John Prine, and Bill Frisell) on violin. The emotions don’t end as we encounter Storm Windows by the beloved John Prine, the title track of his 1980 album, a very focused and respectful cover of the original with McCoy’s harmonica intertwined with Probyn Gregory‘s French horn. Daydream Fail is an intense electric ballad developed with keyborads in the background, the brass section of Kohler and Macchia, and the strings arranged by Gilbert.

I deeply esteem Andrea Parodi, who, in addition to being a significant cultural agitator, is also (and above all) a brilliant songwriter. One of his most beautiful songs is Fiume Solitario, from 2007’s Soldati, which, translated by Eileen Rose, becomes River of Lonely. The singer-songwriter’s interpretation amplifies the song’s Spanish-influenced character, featuring the flamenco guitars of Luca Pirozzi and Luca Giacomelli (members of the italian Grosseto-based group Musica da Ripostiglio, whom we’ll meet again later). The vigorous and powerful sound benefits from the presence of Scarlet Rivera, Bob Dylan’s violinist.

Lockdown sprays energy from every pore, conceived by the songwriter as a sort of homage to Ike & Tina Turner. The rhythm is irresistible, and Gilbert and Mark Sams‘ guitars soar alongside the brass section. If The Moment is a lyrical ballad full of emotion, ‘Til the Wheels Come Off is a fast-paced swing played alongside Musica da Ripostiglio (featuring, in addition to the aforementioned two guitarists, Raffaele Toninelli on upright bass and Emanuele Pellegrini on drums), another truly entertaining moment. The final cover of the famous italian song Ma Che Freddo Fa (Nada, 1969), concludes with a taut rock version Quentin Tarantino would love.

Insanitia deserves a very positive review, thanks to Eileen Rose‘s captivating and energetic style. I attended the album’s release party (it will be officially released from April 24th in Europe and from May 8th in the rest of the world, but it is already available at concerts) and can confirm that when heard live (I’ll discuss that elsewhere), it’s even more engaging and expressive. Throughout her career, the singer-songwriter has been compared to the likes of Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee, and other important voices, influences you’ll easily recognize in her songwriting. What is certain is that the album is born mature and aware of its own means, the result of a decidedly high quality songwriting.
